"Reception & Artist Talk": Student's, Artists gather for recepetion at LBCC

Reception & Artist Talk: NSH 2nd Floor Atrium

“Artists brush up against one another career wise and influence each other,” - Anne Magratten

Wednesday, Jan. 31st  was the anticipated art gallery showing and Reception and Artist Talk at LBCC. The showing was held at the 2nd floor atrium of the NSH gallery. Upon arriving at the event,  attendees were welcomed with light beverages and snacks. The NSH gallery features nine pairs of practicing artists and their work. The theme around the Reception and Artist talk was to have the artists and their chosen mentors inform those in attendance of their work and their artist-mentor relationship.

One of the student gallery coordinators Sin Melendez said that her job entails so much more than expected but that being a student coordinator has been an enjoyable and fulfilling experience. Sin joked and said that, “A lot of the people here are under the impression that there is a magical art fairy.” She laughed and explained that the work is challenging but rewarding.
LBCC art instructor and gallery coordinator Anne Magratten kicked off the event by thanking student gallery coordinators. She said that,  “They are always busy making these shows come to life.” Anne Magratten talked briefly about her own experience working as a mentor and with mentors. She said that, “for me as an artist that relationship was always very distinct.”

Visitors roamed around and admired the art before the artists and mentors began to speak. LBCC student Dakota Smith said that her favorite piece was a painting titled “Tideway” by artist Susan Muriell. She said that she liked seeing the new art being displayed in the gallery.

Student Kara Walpole was drawn to one piece in particular called, “Family tree,” by Georgiana Nehl.
“I really love the dark contrast and the border around it. You look at it and you wonder what was going through the artists head," Kara said. “House of Pratyahara,” by Linnea Solveig was another piece that Kara said made an impact.
She said that,  “The different facial features are just where you wouldn’t expect them to be, I wonder if there is a metaphor behind it.”

Professor Georgiana Nehl is an instructor at the Oregon college of art and craft and the mentor of one of the featured artists, Linnea Solveig. While Linnea Solveig could not make it to the Reception and Artist talk, Nehl had a lot to say about her experience being Solveig's mentor. She said that they had met while Linnea attended Georgiana's art class. She explained that they had bonded over her work and formed a really strong relationship surrounding their art. Georgiana Nehl believes that Linnea was grateful that she understood her vision as an artist.

"She is like a storybook writer who is writing a complicated story," said Georgiana. She said that Linnea Solveig creates stories and then art that replicates those stories.

There is a new piece now showing in South Santiam hall called Knots by Alex Krajkowski, and there are frequent events to keep an eye out for. If you are interested in viewing, or making art, check out the art gallery page on LBCC's website. It will inform of upcoming events, and even show images of the art being displayed.
