"Shawn Mendes" The album review
Shawn Mendes released a brand new self-titled album this month and critics are saying that it’s, “brilliant.”
The self-titled album “Shawn Mendes” was released through Island Records on May 25 of this year.
The album is clean, well thought-out, and full of songs that make you want to cry and then smile and then do both at the same time.
Shawn Mendes gained recognition from the app “vine” which has since been discontinued. He has released three full length studio albums including his most recent. Shawn is 19 years-old and uses his breathy pop sound to enchant his listeners.
Shawn said in an interview with, The Recording academy, “For me, it was just about exploring myself musically and not just sticking to one genre, and allowing myself to create the music that my heart really wanted to make and understanding that it's not about the genre but it's about the person and the cohesiveness within the stories I was telling and with my voice.”
The album has 14 tracks and features artists Julia Michaels and Khalid on songs “youth,” and “like to be you.” The theme is most definitely relationship based. You can’t really dispute the fact that Shawn Mendes and his team drew some creative inspiration from Shawn’s love life.
This self-titled album is definitely his best yet. Everyone of the songs on the album has there merit and draws you in to keep coming back and listening to more. I cannot say the same things about Shawn’s past albums. Shawn is vocally talented and great on the guitar, but something about his first two studio albums were not very memorable.
“Like to be you,” with Julia Michaels is a duet about not understanding what it’s like to be your significant other but desperately wanting to understand them. Julia Michaels and Shawn Mendes’s voices really worked well with each other. Julia has a deep, and sort of raspy voice that worked well with Shawn’s softer voice.
“Variety,” reviewed the album and said that, “Shawn Mendes,” is a remarkably well-crafted pop album that finds the singer trying on different styles, prominently showcasing his collaborators and making some fragrant references.”
